The Bourani is an aphrodisiac made from the nettles that grow wild around the town of Tyrnavo in Larissa. This substance is the focal point of the Penis Festival. The idea is that after you eat the boiled nettles, the tiny thorns cause a pleasant itch in your penis or vagina as you urinate it out hours later. This is the reason for it's afrodisiac effect.
Cooking the Bourani is a fun filled event
The Penis festival, which takes place on the first Monday of lent, a day the Greeks call "Clean Monday" is a time of pranks and naughty jokes. Most of these pranks and jokes take place around the cooking Bourani. If you are in Tyrnavo during the penis festival, go to the main square where the Bourani is cooking. You may even get pulled into the activities as a willing victim of one of the pranks.
